Increasing Student Motivation for Literacy

The research in the past two decades on student motivation has heightened awareness that students often are not motivated to read or learn to read better. This awareness has energized efforts to identify ways to increase student motivation. Admittedly, most of what is described here has not been researched so thoroughly that any of the recommendations can be given with great confidence. As a whole, however, the research community has identified a variety of methods with the potential for increasing student motivation for reading, each of which is conceptually sensible, if not yet fully validated. Teachers who use the methods described in this section will be on the cutting edge of educational motivation, although I expect that edge to be sharpened somewhat in the next few years as more evaluation data on the various techniques reviewed here accumulate.

The methods described in this section range from individual components of literacy instruction (e.g., interesting materials, attribution retraining) to entire redefinitions of the literacy program (e.g., concept-oriented instruction, whole language). The discussion proceeds from research on individual components to approaches intended to redefine literacy instruction completely.

Appropriately Challenging Texts and Tasks

The data are overwhelming that tasks a little bit beyond the learner’s current competence are motivating (e.g., Brophy, 1987). Tasks that are a little bit challenging cause students to work hard and feel good about what they are doing. In addition to being boring, low-challenging tasks never provide learners with the opportunity to see what they can do, and thus undermine confidence (Miller & Meece, 1999). Recall from previous chapters that effective teachers monitor what children are capable of doing and then nudge them to try something slightly more challenging. Such challenge is at the heart of a healthy motivational outlook.
