Running Start (Reading Is Fundamental)

The main idea of the Running Start program, sponsored by the Reading Is Fundamental organization, is that motivation to read will be encouraged by immersing children in books (Gambrell, 1996). The Reading Is Fundamental group emphasizes that children are motivated to read when they can interact with others about what they are reading, when they are exposed to adults and other children who are enthused about reading, and when the adults in their world have high expectations that they can learn to read. Reading Is Fundamental emphasizes that reading is motivating to the extent that children have choice about what they will read and when they will read.

The Running Start program is a 10-week intervention, with grade-1 children challenged to read 21 books (or have the same number of books read to them) during the 10 weeks. At the outset of the program, Reading Is Fundamental donates a large number (60–80) of new books to the library of participating classrooms. The classroom is organized to support student progress toward the goal of interaction with 21 books over the 10-week period, with reading and book sharing common activities in class. Parents and older children visit classrooms to interact with children over books, sometimes reading to them and sometimes listening to the children read.

Motivation to read is encouraged in multiple ways in Running Start classrooms. Children keep track of their progress toward the 21-book goal using a sticker chart. Bookmarks are used to remind children to read but also serve as rewards for reading. When children meet the 21-book goal, they are given some books to take home and keep.
